Adoption Process
Four simple steps to welcome a greyhound into your home
Complete an Application
Start your journey by filling out our adoption application. This helps us understand your home environment, lifestyle, and what you're looking for in a greyhound companion. The application takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and covers topics like your living situation, experience with pets, and what characteristics you're looking for in a dog.
articleStart ApplicationSchedule a Home Visit
Once your application is reviewed, we'll arrange a home visit with one of our volunteers. This is a relaxed, friendly meeting where we can see your home environment, discuss greyhound care and behavior, and answer any questions you may have. We'll check that your yard is secure (if applicable) and ensure your home is safe for a greyhound. This is also a great time to meet some of our available dogs!
What to expect: The visit typically lasts 30-45 minutes. We'll walk through your home and yard, discuss daily routines, and make recommendations for greyhound-proofing if needed.
Meet Your Match
Based on your application and home visit, we'll help match you with greyhounds that fit your lifestyle and preferences. You'll have the opportunity to meet and interact with your potential new companion. We encourage you to bring all family members (including resident dogs, with prior arrangement) to ensure everyone gets along. This is your chance to see the greyhound's personality and make sure it's the right fit.
First Meeting
Get to know the greyhound in a neutral setting. Observe their behavior, energy level, and temperament.
Trial Period
Some dogs may benefit from a trial visit to your home to ensure compatibility before finalization.
Prepare for your new family member
Once your application is approved, we'll provide you with resources to help prepare for your new companion. WAG's adoption fee starts at $450 but can be higher based on the greyhound's socialization, training, and country of origin.
One common issue to be aware of: most greyhounds coming to WAG test positive for a resistant strain of hookworms. WAG tests all incoming hounds for parasites and provides the first round of treatment (five days of Panacur for hookworms). After treatment, there's a waiting period of a couple weeks before a fecal recheck, which is the adopter's responsibility to arrange with their veterinarian. Additional rounds of treatment may be needed.
